Increase in the minimum wage for Bangladesh’s leather and footwear


According to The Financial Express, the government has fixed the minimum monthly wage for workers of the leather goods and footwear sector at 7 100 Bangladeshi taka

According to the same sources, the government has categorised workers and employees of the leather goods and footwear sector in six and four grades respectively.

An apprentice would receive a total of 5 500 Bangladeshi taka as monthly wage (65 US dollars; 56 Euros). A worker's apprentice period would be three months and additional three months could be extended if his or her performance is not satisfactory.

The last minimum wages for the sector was been set at 3 652.50 Bangladeshi taka (43 US dollars; 37 Euros) in 2013.

The Bangladesh Footwear Industry

According to the World Footwear 2020 Yearbook (AVAILABLE HERE) in 2019 Bangladesh was the 8th largest footwear producer (407 million pairs). The manufacturing industry in the Asian country is much orientated to the internal market with only 79 million pairs exported in 2018 (making this the 18th largest exporter of footwear).
